Executive Director and Science Editor
As senior advisor to the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, I support the work of Executive Director Meaghan Parker to develop and fund programs that address the quality, diversity, and sustainability of science journalism. Meaghan succeeded me in October 2024, when I retired after 11 years in the executive director role. I also currently work with Harvard's Public Interest Tech Lab as managing editor of the Journal of Technology Science.
My career has taken a winding path, something I recommend to anyone interested in this kind of work. Before joining CASW, I was editor-in-chief of American Scientist magazine (1992-2008) and staff director of two initiatives at Harvard focused on computing and data science (2008-13). I've learned science through the adventure of interpreting it, in words and pictures, and by working behind the scenes. Earlier I was a university research news director and newspaper journalist.
